The kiwi is New Zealand's national icon and unofficial national emblem. New Zealanders have been "Kiwis" since the days of the First World War. It's a nickname bestowed by fellow Australian soldiers, and it stuck. Today our identity as "Kiwis" is based around our national bird. With a fence in place protecting the young from predation, we could provide a kiwi creche to get the birds up to around 1kg and release them into the surrounding forest. Imagine the kiwi calling from the Richmond Ranges and the Grampions at night. We would continue to work in with loca communityl trapping groups to continue the great work clearing out the pesky stoat and rats that would get the kiwi.
